Dust mites - what you should know
In an average home there can be millions of dust mites. These mites are so small they cannot be seen with the naked eye - in fact 100 will fit on the head of a pin. A female can lay 25-30 eggs every three weeks and they live for up to three months secreting 10 - 30 waste particles a day. It is these secretions that cause all the problems.
Dust mite waste is thought to be one of the major triggers of asthmatic and allergic reactions such as eczema and hayfever.
On average 1/10th of the weight of a two year old carpet (that has not been cleaned) will be dust mite faeces. It is the faeces that cause the greatest allergy problems, when inhaled into the lungs. Some 80% of people that suffer from allergies are allergic to dust mite faeces.
